Packing for relocation takes a little planning to ensure your belongings remain safe during transport and to make unpacking easier. Start by gathering appropriate packing supplies, including plenty of corrugated cardboard boxes of various sizes, packing tape, bubble wrap and/or wrapping paper and something to label your boxes with. Start by packing anything you won’t need until after you move and work backwards until you come to everyday necessities that you’ll wait to pack on moving day. As you’re packing, put anything you no longer use or want in a pile to donate or sell.

Group like items together to pack in the same box, but always wrap fragile items individually. Use smaller boxes for heavy items like books and larger boxes for lighter items like plastic storage containers. In boxes that contain both heavy and light items, place the heaviest items on bottom and work up to the lightest items on top.

Pack each box to the brim, filling empty spaces and the very top of the box with packing materials, so nothing shifts during transport. Ensure box flaps lay flat and repack any box that bulges out at the top. Firmly tape boxes shut and label them accordingly to make unloading and unpacking easier. Keep all your boxes under 50 pounds to avoid injuries.
